How to calculate age using calendar dates

Age in years, months and days is a calendar calculation. It is different from dividing a number of elapsed days by 365, because years and months have different lengths. The Age Calculator uses a birth date and an end date you choose.

Start with the right dates

Enter the full date of birth, then choose the date on which you want the age. For age today, the tool fills the second field from your device. For an application or historical record, use the exact date required by that process.

A person born on 15 January 2000 is 26 years, 8 months and 8 days old on 23 September 2026.

Count full months before remaining days

The calculator finds the largest whole number of calendar months between the two dates without passing the end date. It separates those months into years and months, then counts the days remaining. It also reports total elapsed calendar days.

Month ends need a convention

Not every month contains the same day number. This calculator clamps to the last available day of the target month. For a 31 January start and a 28 February end in a non-leap year, it reports one calendar month. Another system may describe that interval as 28 days.

This difference is a convention, not necessarily an arithmetic error. Read the method used by the organization receiving your result if a particular format matters.

Leap-day birthdays

When a birth date is 29 February, this calculator uses 28 February as its anniversary in a non-leap year. Legal and administrative rules can choose a different treatment. The tool does not decide whether a person meets a legal age requirement.

Time zones and elapsed days

The selected values are treated as dates rather than times of day. Calendar-day subtraction is performed with UTC date values, avoiding an extra or missing hour at a daylight-saving change. It does not calculate age to the exact hour or minute of birth.

Worked example: calculate age step by step

Take a birth date of 15 January 2000 and an end date of 23 September 2026:

  1. From 15 January 2000 to 15 January 2026 is 26 complete years.
  2. From 15 January 2026 to 15 September 2026 is 8 complete months.
  3. From 15 September to 23 September is another 8 days.

The result is 26 years, 8 months and 8 days. If you only need age in completed years, the answer is 26. Do not round it up to 27.

Common mistakes when entering dates

Choosing the right tool

Use the Age Calculator for years, months and days. For a simple count between two dates, use the Date Difference Calculator, which also offers an inclusive option to count both calendar dates. Neither tool excludes weekends or public holidays.
